Waverton substation project

Key features of the Waverton substation project:
• Substation footprint 60 X 10 metres.
• Architecturally designed, fully enclosed buildings.
• Security fencing.
• Extensive landscaping within Wakelin Reserve.

We are increasing the electrical capacity of the railway network by upgrading and constructing new and existing electrical substations across the metropolitan area.

Twenty five substations will be constructed or upgraded over the next five years to improve the reliability on the metropolitan rail network and support the future electrical demands associated with new and additional train services.

A new substation will be constructed east of the city end of Waverton Station and on RailCorp land. This includes a small portion of land that is used as public open space known as Wakelin Reserve.

During construction, pedestrian access will be maintained along the reserve and temporary fencing erected to ensure safe passage. When the works are finished, the area will be extensively replanted, new fencing installed and the park restored to public use.

When will work commence?

A safety fence will be installed along Wakelin Reserve in September with construction works commencing in late September. The project is due for completion in October 2007.

Hours of work

Generally, construction work hours will be:

  • Monday to Friday 7.00am to 6.00pm
  • Saturday 8.00am to 1.00pm

Work may also occur at other times, on weekends and during rail line closedowns. Advance notice of any out of hours or weekend work will be provided to the community.
